Some species, like Australia’s bogong moth, migrate hundreds of miles navigating by the moon, stars, and even the Earth’s magnetic field. Their feathery antennae are astonishingly sensitive—capable of detecting a single molecule of a mate’s pheromone from miles away. Many moths can also hear in ultrasonic ranges, allowing them to recognize the echolocation calls of hunting bats and take evasive action before becoming a meal.
